Ultrasound in pregnancy

Ultrasound in pregnancy is an extremely safe modality of imaging as it involves the use of sound waves (ultrasonic waves)
Which is not harmful for the baby or the mother.

The important ultrasounds in pregnancy are:

  1. Whenever the first diagnosis of pregnancy is made.
  2. At 11-14 weeks of gestation, also known as early anomaly scan (level 1 scan)
  3. At 18-22 weeks also known as target scan, anomaly scan or TIFFA (level 2 scan)
  4. At around 32-34 weeks, which is a growth scan.
  5. At around term, i.e. 37-39 weeks.
  6. More number of ultrasounds may be needed in high-risk cases such as gestational hypertension, gestational diabetes mellitus, IUGR etc. to do the Doppler studies.
